Banwell Garage Service Centre

Banwell Garage is equipped and experienced to deal with all aspects of servicing, whether it be an annual fixed time/distance service, a long-life service schedule or condition-based servicing. The latter servicing programme, operated by most modern BMW and Mercedes vehicles, means that filters and components are only replaced when the vehicle determines it has come to the end of its working life.

It is also important for lower mileage users to consider, at the very least, an oil and filter service once a year – the condition of the oil is significantly impacted/affected by shorter journeys as the engine does not always achieve its optimum running temperature.

Brake fluid reservoirBrake fluid changes are due every two years on most vehicles. It is important that your brake fluid is replaced at the correct intervals, as brake fluid starts to absorb moisture from the moment it is put in the system. The fluid attracts moisture through microscopic pores in rubber hoses, past seals and exposure to the air. After only a year of service, brake fluid in the average vehicle may contain as much as two percent water. After 18 months, the level of contamination can be as high as three percent. And after several years of service, it is not unusual to find brake fluid that contains as much as seven to eight percent water – this lowers the boiling point of brake fluid and can cause a spongy feeling when braking or, even worse, could cause brakes to fail.

Water content in brake fluid is also known to cause problems in modern vehicles as when it runs through sensors, modules and control units the moisture/water in the brake fluid causes damage to the electrical components in the braking system causing failure of these electrical safety systems and leads to costly replacement of control units – a repair that could run to thousands of pounds due to the cost of the parts.

How to select the right Service schedule for your vehicle

Servicing requirements can vary hugely between different vehicle makes and models. At Banwell Garage we strongly recommend that vehicles are serviced once a year or every 10-12,000 miles.

Many modern vehicles run extended or ‘longlife’ service intervals (as explained above) – the choice is usually the customers’ when buying the vehicle new as to whether they wish to run extended intervals or remain on ‘fixed’ annual service intervals. Although oil technology and quality has improved dramatically over the years we still believe that an annual oil and filter change will increase the longevity of a vehicles engine.

During every service we carry out a full inspection of your vehicle, paying special attention to brakes, tyres and suspension components, if something doesn’t need changing just yet we will advise you and note it on your paperwork so you can keep an eye on items that may need attention in the future.

Engine oil & filter, pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs are all changed in line with vehicle manufacturer service schedules (if applicable) based on a vehicle’s age and mileage.

Our Autodata computerised database allows us to follow the most up to date manufacturer recommended service schedules, ensuring that you and your vehicle receives the same attention you would from a main dealer. We also pay attention to smaller items often forgotten about, such as door/boot catches and hinges, these are lubricated to keep them working as they should – all part of the service here at Banwell Garage.

European Block Exemption

The European Block Exemption regulations mean that vehicle manufacturers can no longer insist that you return to one of their dealers to carry out repairs and servicing or risk your warranty being affected. The works can be carried out by an independent garage so long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer’s service schedule. Independent garages generally have much lower overheads than franchised dealers so we can often offer a better value service, without compromising on quality.
